Nonfiction Blog Post - Littering and Pollution

I have read the “Littering and Pollution” by Melissa Kilgore. This article gives information about how we litter, the effects of littering and pollution, and why this is a serious threat to the environment. It also gives instructions on how to help the environment. Littering and pollution can inflict obvious damage animals. For example, humans frequently drop garbage such as plastic bags and broken glass. Plastic bags can asphyxiate animals if they are caught up in it. Broken glass can create wounds if accidentally trampled on or if the animals attempt to ingest it. Littering and pollution can also affect animals in another way. When the toxins from garbage seep into the ground, it can be absorbed by plants or it can find a way into waterways. When plants absorb the toxin, the poisonous substance remains in it. When the plant is eaten by an animal, the toxins are passed on, but the concentration of the toxin will be multiplied by ten. This is called bioaccumulation. When the toxins are passed along the food chain, the concentration of it will always be multiplied by ten. Animals that inherit these poisons will be sick and experience symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, balance issues, lack of blood clotting, and seizures. These toxins may end up in humans, and cause food poisoning. When toxins enter waterways, it will affect creatures that live in them. This can cause deformities when they reproduce. Also, the water may be used by humans as a drinking source.
This article shows that littering and polluting the environment is not the right thing to do. This article is a persuasive. It urges us to take action by recycling, disposing of garbage properly, and reduce the risk of the garbage being hazardous. I think that this article is both trying to raise awareness and getting people to do something about this issue. It informs us on what we may not know to give us a reason to help. I think the part about littering and pollution affecting humans was effective. People usually care about their own health and they would not want to get sick. The author is using this to make the article more interesting to attract more readers.
